Pasture, forages, grains, etc
• Weight, sex and type of animals
Calves, heifers, steers, small or large frame, etc.
• Feeding method
Hand feeding, self-feeding, liquid, blocks, etc.
Your U. S. Feeds Representative can help you build the program best suited to your cows, calves and your goals. He can help you make best use of your forages during various production phases. For example, higher fiber, lower protein forages need to be supplemented with protein to improve rumen fermentation, while adding grain to the diet will actually decrease forage digestibility. By increasing the nitrogen available to the bacteria you get more energy out of the forage and decrease the amount of supplemental energy needed to meet brood cow needs. Low quality forage should be fed only during mid-gestation when a lower level of energy is adequate. Careful management of the breeding and lactation cycles can pay big dividends. Maximizing dry forage utilization and the strategic use of various quality forages during specific production phases are the keys to continued success.
